The next stage here is to mark the location of the lines of the route to make later track placement faster and more accurate. I have used the Path tool to trace each line and siding.

Have you tried using RWDecal to assist with route layout. By using decals created with this software you can accurately position roads, fields, track, buildings etc without the need for paths from Google Earth. I know I am the author of RWDecal (so could be seen to have a biased view point) but I think this is quicker, easier and more accurate.

Yes I have, and I think it could well be the way forward, providing far more detail, faster and more accurately.
However I dont think they should replace terrain painting due to the huge resource hit they generate.
100% agree. Decals should definately only be used for layout purposes.
